Sure, the big cities have it all, but shooting in other parts of the country allows some shows to be more true to their setting. The Walking Dead (2010- present)
– This beloved zombie apocalypse masterpiece enjoys filming primarily in Georgia including areas such as: Atlanta, Senoia, Sharpsburg and Grantville.
House of Cards (2013-present)
– Starring award winning actor Kevin Spacey as ruthless Congressman Frank Underwood, this beloved Netflix show is filmed in Maryland, in areas including: Baltimore, Annapolis and Harford County.
Empire (2015-present)
– This Lee Daniels creation is a hip-hop soap opera and has been deemed a breakthrough show in its genre among critics. The show stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson as Lucius and Cookie Lyon – the founders of the multi-million dollar record label Empire -who try to keep the business in the family by involving their three sons. The show is set in New York, but is actually filmed in Chicago.
Better Call Saul (2015- present)
– This is a newcomer, but is quickly picking up momentum on the charts. The show centers on everybody’s favorite lawyer from Breaking Bad Saul Goodman, before he met the legendary ‘Heisenberg’. Like its predecessor, Better Call Saul is set and filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After all, it’s hard to duplicate those scorching deserts anywhere else.
Fresh off the Boat (2015-present)
– This sitcom is about an Asian family that moves into a new neighborhood and open up a cowboy-themed steak restaurant. The family must now adjust to the culture clash in a place that doesn’t have a large Asian population. The show is set and filmed in Orlando, Florida and has become a favorite on many must-watch lists.
Rectify (2013-present)
– A show about Daniel Holden, an ex-convict who has been released from death row after being found innocent for his alleged crime, and the adjustments he must make in the free world among much judgement from those around him. The show takes a look into southern life and is filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Last Man on Earth (2015- present)
– Set in Tucson, Arizona, this post-apocalyptic comedy stars Will Forte as Phil Miller who returns home and believes himself to be the last man on earth after a virus affects the planet. The show is filmed in parts of Southern California.
Zoo (2015-present)
– Based on the James Patterson novel of the same name, this drama covers the investigation of the rise in violent attacks of animals across the world. Filming for this show takes place in New Orleans.
The Originals (2013-present)
– The spinoff of the popular Vampire Diaries features the family drama among the Michaelson Vampires, known as The Original Vampires. The show is set in New Orleans and is filmed there and in Atlanta.
Scream Queens (2015 – present)
– This Ryan Murphy creation is a black comedy/horror TV show which features the mystery of a murderer who is targeting the girls of a popular sorority. With an all-star cast including Emma Watson, Abigail Breslin and Keke Palmer, the show is filmed in New Orleans.
